OUR HISTORY

On July 1, 1995 Saint Benedict the Abbot parish was established on the west end of Lebanon.  It is composed of the former SS. Cyril and Methodius Slovak parish and Our Lady of Guadeloupe Hispanic Parish.

On October 27, 1905, Father Andrew J. Kennedy was appointed the founding pastor of the parish of SS. Cyril and Methodius for the care of Catholics of Slovak, Croatian and Polish background in Lebanon and vicinity.  On May 29, 1906 ground was broken for a church and rectory.  The cornerstone was laid by Bishop John W. Shanahan on September 20, 1906.  The first mass was celebrated in the new Church on June 9, 1907 and Father Kennedy moved into the rectory four days later.  The date of the dedication of the church was July 7, 1907, the Feast of SS. Cyril and Methodius, making the Church the oldest Catholic Church in Lebanon city.

The jointure of these two congregations (SS. Cyril and Methodius and Our Lady of Guadaloupe) in 1995 brought into existence one of the Diocese of Harrisburg's successful multi-cultural parishes.
